Banquet: Legacy (5/14)

CHP Event
Saturday, May 14th
6:00-9:00pm Student Center

CHP's end-of-the-year banquet is a feast to behold, as are the performances, photo slideshows, and awards. The theme this year is inspired by Tron: Legacy. If you are interested in being an M.C., making slideshows, performing, or making decorations, please contact Kate at barkerk@uci.edu or Scott at sslupik@uci.edu.

Banquet kind of reminds me of social security, except for the fact that I actually expect to receive benefits from banquet at some point.

The cake was delicious. Oh yeah, the rest of the banquet was great too. I got the golden donut because I'm awesome. And there were some really neat performances to liven things up. I was impressed - the room seemed to be the perfect size for all of us. Let CHSC know if you'd prefer long rectangular tables or round tables for next year's banquet.

Jump for Japan (5/5)

CHP Event
Thursday, May 5th
Sky High

So basically, this is an event at a place called "Sky High". It is a giant room full of trampolines. If that doesn't sound like a crazy good time, then stop reading this site because you'll probably be bored by the blurbs of anything else. If it does sound fun, check out Sky High's website here. Also, practice your backflips - we might be having some ninja fights (but leave the shurikens and nunchaku at home).

That was wonderful. You get so tired doing that for an hour but it's so much fun. They had dodgeballs and they did it right. I think everybody enjoyed it, and I recommend doing this again. I landed on my head near the end and my voice changed for several hours! What an interesting experience.

Battle of the Brains XIII: An Epic of Trivia Epicness (5/2)

CHP Event
Monday, May 2nd
7:00pm in HIB 100

An annual CHP tradition. Battle of the Brains is a trivia contest between the students and the faculty. Usually the faculty wins. Your job is to make sure that doesn't happen. So start training! The event is sponsored by Kaplan and admission is free. Food and entertainment are provided, and all attendees will have the opportunity to win prizes from Hooters, K1 Speed, the LA Lakers, and more!

I will be there throwing candy at people. I always get the best jobs :D good thing they still trust me with sweets...

Well, the students lost but put up a good fight. All in all it was a lot of fun, and I think everybody enjoyed it. I sure had a lot of fun trucking candy to people and running around the whole time. See you all at next year's BotB!

Getty (4/30)

CHP/NAR Event
Saturday, April 30th
1:00-5:00pm at...The Getty

An all-day trip to the Getty. It's an art museum, it will be fun if you like artsy stuff (but please don't draw on the walls with crayons).

According to the CHP newsletter blurb, from which I often shamelessly copy, there is a "blooming garden amidst dramatic architecture". This sounds like something from a WoW raid to me. I'm totally there. Unfortunately, there are no summoning stones, so if you know anybody with cars, make sure to invite them since there is a shortage of drivers.

The Getty was superb! I was especially a fan of the outdoor garden and the architecture. I highly recommend a trip to anyone interested in art. We also stopped at Diddy Riese, a tiny little ice cream sandwich shop at UCLA. It's very close and very good. Thanks to Mary Gillis for that suggestion!

Wayzgoose (4/16)

UCI Event
Saturday, April 16th
Aldrich Park

A festival to celebrate UCI? Cool. There's lots of food. We will probably be selling stuff. It's lots of fun. Not much else to say at this point. Try to stay here that weekend. :D

Wayzgoose: Delicious. :9 I don't really know what we were celebrating but I celebrated dessert and my lunch consisted of strickland's ice cream and like 10 cookies from the chsc booth. There was a ferris wheel and a rock wall in aldrich park, and the shuttles were driving around ring road giving tours. To sum up the day: it's like one of those weird dreams you have where not everything makes sense but it's actually plausible.

CHP Retreat (4/2-3)

CHP Event
Sat-Sun April 2nd-3rd
Anza Borrego

CHP Spring Retreat was the greatest thing ever. My favorite CHP event so far. The weather on the first day was wonderful. The oasis was as promising in the distance as it was up close (and the water felt great ! :D ). And the smores were delicious. Props to the Arroyans for singing campfire songs in their tent. The night was nice and warm, and the stars were gorgeous.
On the second day, some of us went on an extra hike in the morning during the sunrise - it was beautiful. The second hike was great too. Thanks to everyone for coming out. I hope you had as much fun as I did ! An extra special thanks to all the drivers, and to the PAA's and the Honors Staff for all of their hard work. See you all at next year's retreat !

(Pictures are all over Facebook, but you probably already knew that.)

Wicked (3/29)

CHP Event
Tuesday, March 29th
Orange County Performing Arts Center

A musical. A different side of the classic tale The Wizard of Oz. If you haven't seen it, and think there's a remote chance that you will like it, then you should go. Because you will like it. Tickets are only $35 at the honors office. Such a good deal.

Wicked was SO good. I kept getting goosebumps. I think I liked the story in this better than that of the original Wizard of Oz. It's a lot more focused on the human aspect of it rather than simply the development of character traits and the exploration of a fantasy world (although I may be oversimplifying there, since I've never been much of a fan of the original).

Honors Experience Day (3/5)

CHP Event
Saturday, March 5th all day
UCI

An annual favorite of CHP students. Honors Experience Day is a recruiting event for prospective students, and it is managed by CHP student volunteers. You even get a shirt for volunteering!

This year, CHSC will have a hot-dog stand (YES!). I will be there cooking, selling, purchasing, and consuming food. Stop by and support us! We aim to feed the masses, but seeing familiar faces is always nice.

Honors Experience Day: A resounding success. The panels and tours were great and the hot dog stand did pretty well too. Thanks to all of the volunteers who rocked their purple shirts. We gave everyone a great impression of UCI. Because who doesn't like purple?

Variety Show (2/28)

CHP Event
Monday, February 28th at TBD
Location TBA

The show you've all been waiting for! Plenty of promising acts are already scheduled. If you're interested in performing or have recommendations, email Kevin Mori and Brittany Chew at chpsocial@gmail.com by Friday, February 11th.

Variety Show: The variety show was amazing! Thank you so much to all of the performers, all of the dessert chefs, and our emcee's Elaine and Jeremy! You all did a wonderful job, and everything was quite impressive. I was in charge of the sweets table (lots of fun). We made $117.40 for kidworks. Incredible. I love being in the CHP.

Kaplan Practice Test Day (2/26)

UCI Event
Saturday, February 26th at 9:45am
UCI: SSPA area

Free practice tests from Kaplan! GRE, LSAT, and more. Tests are proctored/monitored, just like the real thing (how exciting!). A good opportunity to see how what to expect and how you'll do, and you'll also get scores back as well. Check the fliers in the locus for more information. Attendance highly recommended.

NAR Unveiling (2/24)

NAR Event
Thursday, February 24th at night (time TBD)
The Locus

NAR's quarterly unveiling! This one will be extra fancy. Come see the all the submitted works that made it into NAR's winter quarter journal! And enjoy tablecloths and upscale snacks. Stay classy.

Gina's Pizza Fundraiser (2/23)

CHP Fundraising Event
Wednesday, February 23 at dinner time
Gina's Pizza...(big surprise right?)

An excuse to go to Gina's! As if you need one. :9 num num. Get a flier or just tell them you're with the CHP, and they'll give us some of the money you give them. And that way everyone's happy after you get your pizza. See just how much you can eat, because that way we'll get more funds. Don't make this a casual dinner. Make it a hardcore dinner!

Peer Mentor Old School Game Night (2/22)

CHP Event
Tuesday, February 22nd at 7:00pm
The Shire

The Peer Mentor Coordinators are proud to present Old School Game Night! Travel back in time to the days before XBOX Live and MMORPG's. Join your fellow CHPers for a night of snacks and the classic games Taboo, Pictionary, Apples to Apples, and Scattergories, as well as a few wacky group activities. Old School Game Night will go down Tuesday, February 22nd in the Shire, so bring your game face, and leave the controller at home!

An old-fashioned style game night, featuring games that won't be ruined by spontaneous EMP detonations, because those are common here at UCI. Non-virtual food will be there, too.

CHP Semi-Formal (2/19)

CHP Event
Saturday, February 19th from 6:00pm - 10:00pm
Phinneas Banning Alumni House

This year's theme: New Orleans Jazz/Princess and the Frog. Tickets will be $15 presale at the honors office starting two weeks before the event, and $18 at the door. Guests outside of the CHP are welcome as well!

Semi-Formal: Fantastic! It was so nice to see you all so fancy. :] Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and the sporadic rain really enhanced the atmosphere. The alumni house worked well, the DJ did a great job, and the food was pretty good too. Thanks to everyone for coming out, even though it was raining - I hope you had a blast!

America's Funniest Home Videos TV Taping (2/19)

CHP Event
Saturday, February 19th from 1:30pm - 5:00pm
1600 Rosecrans Ave., Manhattan Beach, CA

FREE to attend! We just need 10 people to sign up in order to make this happen. If you're worried about being able to attend semi-formal that night, we plan to get back to campus by 6pm, so you can do both! And you don't need to worry about changing since the attire is semi-formal for both events. If you're interested, go to the honors office and ask for the sign-in sheet for the TV Taping, or if you have more questions, you can contact Matthew Nease at mnease@uci.edu, or through Facebook. Sign-ups are first come, first served, so sign up soon!

Because watching people get hurt is always fun!

Faculty Coffee Hour (2/18)

CHP Event
Friday, February 18th from 9:00am - 11:00am

Coffee hour, but with faculty! It's extra fun, and there's extra food, so that makes the whole thing extra good. I especially like the cheese danishes. Now that I've revealed this, I'm sure you'll all make a beeline for those and eat them so I can't have any. Well, that would be a big disappointment! I'd have to walk all the way over to the Zot and Go and buy myself one! (You can't stop me)

Also, if you would like to volunteer to be a Faculty Greeter, please email the PAAs at chppaa@uci.edu to sign up!

Kaplan GRE Workshop (2/16)

Wednsday, February 16th at 6:00pm
The Locus

The GRE is being changed! Kaplan will be holding a workshop in the locus to familiarize you with these differences. Check out the fliers in the locus for...slightly more information?

Upperclassman v. Underclassman Ultimate Frisbee (2/12)

CHP Event
Saturday, February 12th from 1:00pm - 4:00pm
AV Field

Ultimate Frisbee, with snacks provided. I've heard that it will be legendary.

Ultimate Frisbee: Hey upperclassmen. You're all lame. You should go next time.

(Annual) NAR Haiku Contest (2/7)

NAR's Haiku Contest: Submit a haiku (5-7-5) inspired by this picture. Submissions due by the date of the NAR picking, Monday, February 7th. Submissions can be emailed, placed inside the box in the locus, or thrown at Melissa or Corrie in the form of a paper airplane dragonfly or creative shape. Because NAR is all about creativity! This is the photo for the Haiku contest. A super shiny toaster to anyone who can connect it to Global Warming! :P

Homecoming Tailgate (1/22)

CHP Event
Saturday, January 22nd at 4:00pm
Meet outside Loma in Mesa Court
Tailgate party for homecoming! This Saturday (1/22) is UCI's Homecoming and the CHP will be attending! If you are interested in checking out the Street Festival and the Homecoming Game with your friends.

Broomball (1/19)

CHP Event
Wednesday, January 19th at 10:00pm
KHS Ice Rink: Meet at AV1 lot or flagpoles at 9:00pm for rides

Broomball again! I highly encourage you to try it out if you haven't, it's a lot of fun. Very slippery, though - if you have kneepads, bring them because they'd be wonderful. Or just learn to balance and feel cool.

Broomball: Lots of slippery goodness. Kind of makes up for the lack of snow, almost. Anyway, Broomball was excellent. No surprises there. We had so many people that a third ball was added, and it worked! The ice was really nice this time, and I think it made for a great game - props to the goalies, especially. Maybe we could get some teams going and make this a regular occurrence.

Capture the Flag (1/13)

CHP Event
Thursday, January 13th at 8:00pm
Aldrich Park

Everybody's familiar with this game - hopefully the weather will be nicer to us this time and it won't have to be canceled. Sometimes the police ask us questions when we do this, but just tell them it's a CHP event, and they'll understand.

The Godfather with Prof. Chiampi (1/7)

PAA Event
Friday, January 7th at 7:00pm
Arroyo (Mesa Court)

Enjoy a special screening of the 1972 classic The Godfather, complete with commentary from UCI's own Professor Chiampi and FREE pizza and snacks.

Personally, I haven't seen The Godfather yet, but I'm well aware of its standing as a classic, and I've heard this professor is...quite the character. It should be interesting, to say the least. I must admit, the presence of food is certainly an attraction. I'll definitely be going. Sign up in the Honors office or one of the freshman resident halls by Thursday (hopefully you already knew that - if not, I recommend reading the CHP newsletter, as it's very informative). Hope to see you there (especially if you don't eat my pizza)!

The Godfather: Professor Chiampi's commentary was wonderfully informative and entertaining. I think it added a lot to the movie, which probably would have seemed rather slow otherwise. The pizza was delicious. Thanks to everyone for showing up! I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.

Fall Quarter

Texas Feed 'Em (11/30)

Set for Tuesday, November 30th at 7:30pm in AV 1012. (Whoa - it's almost December already!) Come take part in a charity poker tournament that includes faculty members. The buy-in will be cans of food, at least two, and the cans will be donated to a local food bank. There will also be raffle prizes just for bringing cans! Nope, can't read my poker face.

Broomball (11/29)

Set for Monday, November 29th from 10:30pm-12:00am at the KHS Ice Arena. We will be carpooling there, and it will be glorious. Don't miss out! Goaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaal!

Broomball: It hurt so good. A cold night + the cold ice + getting hit with sticks + falling repeatedly = lots of fun. It just makes sense. I hope everyone enjoyed it! Look for more broomball next quarter (possibly early next quarter)...

CHP Freshmen vs. Upperclassmen Football Game (11/20)

Set for Saturday, November 20th from 12:30pm-3:30pm in the Arroyo Vista Field. A competitive and friendly game of flag football between the freshmen and the upperclassmen of the CHP. Lunch will be provided. Lunch, you say? That alone makes it worth going!

Freshmen vs. Upperclassmen Football Game: Quite the game! The first half saw some heavy, sudden rain, but the second half was mostly in sunshine. Freshmen won the game, and the "golden cups" along with it. I was hoping to see some mud-wrestling, but alas, nobody seemed too keen on the idea. Food was provided by Pippin, and lived up to Pippin's reputation. Take that for what you will. Pictures should make an appearance in some time...

Hike with the PAA's (11/13)

Set for Saturday, November 13th at Crystal Cove State Park. We'll be staying at the beach afterward! Meet at 9am in AV1 - that's the parking lot right outside (and across Arroyo Drive) the honors halls in Arroyo Vista. There will be a long hike and a short hike, and rides will be arranged before the event. Hike yeah we're going to the beach afterward!

PAA Hike: An excellent way to spend a Saturday! We hiked around Crystal Cove State Park and saw some spectacular views. Then, we headed over to the beach for a little relaxation in the sand and sun before heading back. Thanks to everyone who came along - we hope you enjoyed it! Pictures are all over Facebook ;)

Faculty Coffee Hour (11/12)

Set for Friday November 12, from 9:00am - 11:00am in the Locus. It's like coffee hour, but with professors! ;)
The ones we've invited, at least. A preview of the guest list:
Schonfeld, Shaka, Tobias, Miles, Hart, Richardson, and Welling... The usual donuts, bagels, coffee, tea, and juice will be there, as well as some special treats just for this week. Don't forget: this is a dress-up event.
So get fancy!

Faculty Coffee Hour: Quite the turnout! Plenty of interesting faculty to talk to, and the food was good too. Thanks to everyone for showing up and eating the food meeting the faculty, and especially to those of you for dressing up! Makes me glad to be a part of the CHP. ;)

Peer Mentor/Mentee Potluck (11/11)

Set for Thursday November 11, from 6:00pm - 9:00pm in Arroyo of Mesa Court. Come check out the first ever CHP mentor-mentee potluck! Eat and hang out with your mentor, mentee, and fellow CHP'ers. It's Veteran's Day so there's no school which means you can sleep in, do whatever you want during the day, and then come to an awesome potluck for dinner! No school (Veteran's Day) + CHP Event = Good day :]

Peer Mentor/Mentee Potluck: Oh man, delicious! I'm still stuffed. Plenty of people showed up, and there was still a good amount of food to go around. It tasted great! (I tried everything). Thanks to everyone who made/brought something, to Alison and Rez for all their work in planning the event, and to Spencer and Arroyo for hosting it!

Halloween Dance (10/29)

Friday, October 29th. 8pm in AV 1012.
Nightmare Before Christmas themed. Be there.
