Greetings Fencers and Fencers-to-be! I’m Laelia Nguyen, one of your presidents for the 2017-2018 school year. If you’re reading this, chances are you’re looking to throw down on the strip with a sword in hand, in which case you’re in the right place! We welcome people of all levels, beginners and experienced fencers alike. We have undergraduates, graduates, and faculty in our ranks. We offer epee, foil, and sabre at our club, as well as many opportunities to compete, learn from coaches, and hang out at social events!
There are many ways to get in contact with us. You can reach us by email at firstname.lastname@example.org. You can also join our Facebook page and be up-to-date on competitions and practices. We’ll be at the Anteater Involvement Fair on Monday, September 25 from 11-4pm in Aldrich Park where you can meet our officers and ask them questions about the club and fencing in general. You can also find us at Late Night at the ARC doing demos from 9:45-10:05pm in the Main Gym (the basketball courts) and also at 10:30-11:25pm in the Training Zone (a room on the second floor) if you’d like to see us in action.
Our practices begin Week 1, October 4 at 8:30 pm in the Activity Annex, and continue every week of the quarter on Wednesdays from 8:30 pm -11 pm and Fridays from 7 pm – 11 pm. All you need to bring are clothes and shoes that you’re comfortable working out in. We’ll provide everything else. Club dues are $40 per quarter and are to be paid by the start of Week 4.
See you soon!
In preparation for the new year, the officers have ratified an amendment to the club constitution removing the office of the vice presidency and replacing the presidency with two overlapping co-presidencies, one whose term begins in June and one whose term begins in March. Laelia Nguyen, elected president for this year, stays on as the June-term president, while Benjamin Leider, elected vice president for this year, stays on as the March-term president (outgoing March 2018).
I’m sure that I won’t be the first to say this, but welcome to college! You’ll have many exciting opportunities at UCI, and getting involved in clubs can be one of the most rewarding. We hope you check out fencing in your exploration of all UCI has to offer.
Join our Facebook group for the latest updates on the Fencing Club. If you have questions, you can post there or email us at email@example.com. To learn more about us, visit our About page. You’ll find information about our club and how to join, as well as what makes fencing so awesome. Separate from our club is a beginners fencing class offered by the ARC on Wednesday nights at 7pm. Our club practices on Wednesday nights at 8:30pm and Friday nights at 7pm, and our first practice is after the ARC class on September 30th at 8:30pm in the ARC Activity Annex. Anyone is welcome, from undergrads to graduate students, from complete beginners to A-rated competitors. Just wear comfortable workout clothes and we’ll provide the rest. We offer coaching, competition opportunities, and social events where you can get to know your fellow swordspeople. And since the club is a student-run organization, you can get involved with the club leadership. If you’re looking to get in shape, fill out your resume, or find new friends, the Fencing Club at UCI is a great place to start!
The Fencing Club will be at the Anteater Involvement Fair on Monday, September 19th from 11am-3pm in Aldrich Park. Drop by to say hi, ask questions, and sign up for email updates. Later that night we’ll be at Late Night at the ARC with demos from 10-11pm.
For more information, feel free to poke around this website, and don’t hesitate to contact us either by e-mail or on our Facebook group. You are of course more than welcome to drop by practice. See you at the ARC!
Practice is canceled from July 8 to July 15 as the adult supervision (so to speak) will be out of town. Practice will resume on July 20, the Wednesday of the week after next. There should be no further hiatuses from July 20 through the end of the summer.
The Fencing Club is currently meeting for summer practice on Wednesdays and Fridays from 7-10 pm in the ARC Activity Annex. If you’re new to fencing, drop by and check us out! If you’re a current fencer in the area over the summer, come and fence–we’re still here!
