Global Medical Brigades is an international network of more than 50 university clubs and volunteer organizations that provide communities in developing nations with sustainable health care solutions. Our current emphasis is in Honduras, where nearly 1,000 GMB volunteers travel annually to deliver services to our 40 communities. In 2007, GMB volunteers provided aid to nearly 40,000 patients in low-income villages with limited to no access to medicine otherwise.

NEWS FROM MEDICAL BRIGADES HQ
Oct. 6, 2008
Unless you experience it for yourself, you will never know what participating in a medical/dental brigade can do for you and your life. Prior to my brigade experience in Honduras in January 2008 I had always wanted to do something like this. I had passed up previous opportunities for one reason or another. Now, I intend to make Global Medical Brigades an annual expedition and this commitment will be the reason for passing up events at home.
The service you will provide is greatly needed and incredibly appreciated. Yet, you receive far more than you give. The Honduran people have helped me to appreciate everything so much more than ever before. To serve people who have very little but still celebrate life daily is humbling. These happy, loving people have a lot to teach us.
Global Brigades' programs are well planned and well coordinated. To be involved with such an outstanding organization is an honor. You will feel guilty about how well you are treated. But they do it out of respect and appreciation. I have never felt so rewarded for the services I provide as I did in Honduras.
I could write a book and still not say all I could about the benefits of participating in a brigade. One remaining thing I must point out is that the students who participate are exceptional. If you want to be taken back to your own exuberance as a student spend a week with dedicated, ambitious individuals who work with little to do so much.
If you don't have the most exhilarating experience of your life, get checked for Dengue Fever.

URGENT: NO PSEUDOEPHEDRINE!!!
This is EXTREMELY important. The Honduran consulate is cracking down on pseudoephedrine because of its common use as a precursor in the synthesis of methamphetamine. For yours and your groups safety please check all of the medication you bring down with your brigade to ensure that:
1) None of the medication is expired
2) Pseudoephedrine is not listed as an ingredient in any of the medications
**Group leaders, make sure that you forward this information to your brigaders**

Introducing Additional Medical Brigade Programs Global Medical Brigades recently added new programs to provide additional benefit to our 40 partner communities. GMB groups are now assessing the root causes of respiratory disease in these communities and attacking the problems at their source. According to the World Health Report in 2002, indoor air pollution, predominantly from open fire stoves using solid fuel (such as wood, dung and crop waste), is the fourth greatest risk factor for death and disease in the world’s poorest countries. It is linked to more than 1.5 million deaths per year, predominantly women and children. GMB university group members are now building clean cooking systems/stoves with community members during a portion of their stay in Honduras. They now have the unique opportunity to make long lasting contributions to the respiratory health and quality of life of individual families. This new program also allows the students to spend more one-on-one time with community members to learn about their culture and share in their community.
While the university students are implementing these preventative health initiatives, the medical professionals provide individual follow up care assessments for our patients in these communities suffering from chronic diseases. This allows them to spend more time with the patients in our communities suffering from the most serious diseases.
At Global Brigades, we are constantly reassessing our programs to ensure we are acting with solidarity in mind in a culturally sensitive manner, while providing the best service to our communities and the best experience to our international volunteers. We’re very excited to be making positive, quantifiable differences in the lives of our brothers and sisters in our partner communities in Honduras and can’t wait for all our volunteer groups to have the opportunity to participate in these meaningful programs.
A huge thank you to our Spring Brigaders! From March through May the University of Victoria, Penn State, University of North Carolina, Marquette, University of Southern California, Medical College of Wisconsin, UC San Diego, Portland State, Eastern Virginia Medical School, Athletico, Arizona State and the University of Illinois visited Honduras to perform medical brigades. More than 300 volunteers performed public health services to nearly 20,000 patients.
Go UCSD!
On their very first brigade, UCSD had the pleasure of experiencing brigades outside of the departments of Francisco Morazan and El Paraiso. The group of 34 students and 3 doctors traveled 5 hours outside of San Pedro Sula to reach the town of Gracias, Lempira. They saw over 2,500 patients in just 4 brigades. In addition to successfully serving the people of Gracias, the group was able to enjoy some of Honduras’ beauty. They were able to visit the Mayan Ruins of Copan, the hot water springs of Lempira, the Spanish Fort of Gracias, and the National Park of Zelaque. What a trip guys! Great job! Water Brigades!
We are very excited to announce the launch of Global Water Brigades, a program to address water and sanitation projects in our villages. Students will be challenged to work alongside international experts in clean water solutions to team with our Honduran community leaders to implement. The applications are officially open for the first National Water Brigade Trips May-29-June 5 and August 29-September 5. For more information, check out our website at waterbrigades.org or contact program Director Orion Haas, orion@globalbrigades.org.
Brigades Fundraising Site
We are very pleased to announce the launch of our new fundraising site. The site enables volunteers to raise awareness and funds for their trip by creating a unique homepage for every brigader. Presidents can now keep track of all their in-country fees and pull reports electronically. Go to the Support link above to be directed to the site. Thank you Intelis!
