Tirgan 1390 (2011) Cultural Show and Party

Society of Iranian Graduate Students at UC Irvine (SIGS) is proud to present another fantastic event, Tirgan Cultural Show and After-party. This event is celebrated on the 13th day of the month of Tir and refers to the archangel Tir (arrow) or Tishtar (lightning bolt) who appeared in the sky to generate thunder and lightning for much needed rain.



The event includes featuring fusion music performance, speech on history and culture of Tirgan, Fal-e-kouzeh**, and several special traditional programs of Tirgan. Dinner, tea, wine and especial nuts of Tirgan are included. The after party kicks off at 9:30PM with the latest Persian beats.

Mohsen Namjoo, Up close and Personal meeting with, April 14th 2011

Society of Iranian Graduate Students (SIGS) at UC Irvine Presents:



We are proud to have world-class musician, Mohsen Namjoo, in Irvine on April 15th. He will be here for his "NAMJOO: unplugged" concert, which you can find the flyer in the attachment.

As a part of our mission, SIGS is trying to support cultural events, therefore the day before his concert we organized a friendly gathering with Mohsen on Thursday April 14th at 6pm-8pm in Doheny Beach Meeting Rooms in UCI Student Center. During this meeting he will answer the questions from the audience. This talk is in Farsi and free to attend. But since the seats are limited please RSVP to sigs@uci.edu email if you are attending the meeting. Refreshment will be provided by SIGS.

Also we like to invite you to his concert on April 15th at Barclay Theater. They are going to give a $5 discount on the Namjoo T-shirts to students with a valid student ID.

HAFT-SIN Contest: We are asking you to prepare your gorgeous Haft-Sin tables and bring them and set them up on the specific tables assigned for the contest inside the hall. Each attendee will vote for one table during the event, and finally, the owner of the best Haft-Sin table will receive an Apple iPod Nano! (iPod Nano). We only have 12 tables available, so please send an email to sigs@uci.edu ASAP for reserving a table, with a short description of your design. You have to bring your table from noon and set it up inside the hall by 3:15pm on the event day.

Up Close and Personal with Hamed Nikpay, 01/31/10

Hamed Nikpay is for sure one of Iranian community's gifted artists. His knowledge of Persian music, ability to perform various Persian instruments masterfully, and his incisive interpretation and selection of Persian poetry for his songs, give him a uniqe position amongst Iranian new generation of musicians.



This weekend he is in Irvine for his "The Owner of This Land - Maaleke in Khaak" concert. As part of our mission to support cultural events, we have made a special deal for SIGS members: Those who purchase $35 or $45 tickets for this concert, will get $5 discount from Hamed Nikpay himself and $10 discount from SIGS as a support to the event.

SIGS also has organized a friendly gathering with Hamed on Sunday Jan 31st. He is going to talk about Iranian traditional music, Fusion music, and similarities between roots of Flamenco and Iranian traditional music.

Yalda night Celebration, 12/11/2009

The Yalda festival is a legacy from our ancient culture; from a time when our ancestors were celebrating the rebirth of the goddess of light and the victory of Ahura over Ahriman in the longest night of the year. It is still a symbol of perdition of darkness and a significant festival in our culture. As a beautiful tradition all Iranians get together with their families and friends and celebrate Yalda night with wide variety of joyful activities.



As with the past years, Society of Iranian Graduate Students at UC Irvine (SIGS) cordially invites you to an unforgettable night of joy and happiness to celebrate Yalda. We'll serve food, wine and refreshments. And there will be cultural performances and of course music and dance.

Yalda Night Celebration, 12/20/2008
These days are marked with joyful moments of holidays. However we have better, more important reasons to celebrate it. Society of Iranian Graduate Students at UC Irvine (SIGS) is proud to invite you to celebrate the longest and the most important night in Persian culture, Yalda.

We are going to have a night (not necessarily the longest one) full of joy and dance. Of course Persian food will be served. To attend the party, registration is needed and because of limited availability it works on the basis of first come first serve.
