Hi everyone,
After speaking with OIT, it has been decided that we will no longer be able to offer new @UCI.EDU e-mail aliases to campus organizations. I don't enjoy being the bearer of bad news, but we will try to make the best of it. OIT/NACS has a lot on its plate, as does the Dean of Students family.
As far as I know, existing aliases will not be removed. I will also try to ensure that any alias requested prior to today will be created. Please let us know if your
pre-11/17/2009 alias request doesn't work in a week or so.
NOTE: We will not be able to provide any support for existing aliases. Changing your account name is OK, but the alias can't change (i.e.
coolclub@clubs.uci.edu has coolclub@uci.edu; it wants TheCoolClub@clubs.uci.edu; we can't change the UCI alias, so CoolClub's alias is still
coolclub@uci.edu).
I removed the alias request option from our renewal form (we are planning to update the process anyway). Some documentation on this site may refer to mail aliases, so please disregard it. When in doubt, contact us with questions.
We are reviewing our options for mail services. Since we have the clubs.uci.edu and campusorgs.uci.edu domains, we were thinking of adding
OrgName@campusorgs.uci.edu as an option. We already offer
OrgName@clubs.uci.edu.
We are also considering a move to Google for e-mail. We would still control registration, account creation, etc, but Google would handle webmail, SPAM control, and other server-related stuff. If this does occur, we would give plenty of warning. We would also migrate all existing messages to the new accounts (so no worries about transferring).
As always, I will keep you posted. Thanks,
Shawn
