Mailman came pre-installed with our new server software.  We have enabled it but are having trouble getting it to work.  We were not familiar with Mailman or listserv administration so it has been an entirely new experience. It looks like this will be a GREAT service, once we get it going.

Initially, we could not get in to do anything at all.  After doing some research, I found how to set the master/root password from the command line.  After that, we were able to get in and create lists --- sort of.  A bug error pops up before the list creation process has been concluded but the list is created enough that a list admin can be set up and the admin can log into the list settings to fully configure the list (apparently).

Users can even be added to the list in some cases and a welcome message will be auto-sent to all addresses which join.  This may not be consistent, however.

The obvious problem so far is that messages sent to the list (whatever-list@spirit.dos.uci.edu) is not distributed.  An error is generated that seems to indicate that the list is not recognized by the server.  Scanning some logs seems to indicate a problem with the server aliases database.  Since mail lists are not actual users, mail sent to HuhHuh??@spirit.dos.uci.edu is interpreted as a user unless the alias database otherwise defines or re-routes it to mailman, or so I am guessing.

There probably needs to be other settings set, too.  I have seen evidence that other things are not correct as well, so we need help with configuration if anyone has experience with mailman installations.

Well, we are still in the testing phase, but thanks to UCI Postmaster Con Wieland, we may finally be up and running.  After delving into the innards of Mailman and scouring the web, we tracked down some of the problems, one of which was a permissions issue (of course!).

Mail list testing can now resume, although previous test accounts had to be deleted since they had been made while the creation process was dumping before finishing everything.  Now, when a new list is created, the entire process is being completed without error and a welcome message is sent to the new owner with an auto-generated password.

Currently, list names are the same as a group's username followed by "-list".  This helps us keep track of who a list's owner is and reduces/elminates the possibility that we have a conflict between account usernames and list usernames.

After some evaluation time, we may allow groups to have more than one list, such as username-members@spirit.dos.uci.edu or username-alumni@spirit.dos.uci.edu.  We'll have to see what impact these mail lists will have on server performance, storage, and administration/support time (the Spirit Server program relies on volunteers from clubs and organizations, so more volunteers = more service, so tell your members to join us!).  Smiley

Fall 2004 will probably be the official start date of this new service, but we are still seeking pilot testers, so if your group would like to get a headstart and preview the mail list service, please send a message to spirit at uci.edu ("at = @" in this spambot infested world).
