Activities and Events Calendar

Howdy, folks!

For years now, I've been working ON & OFF on a web-based activities post system that will let members of the UCI community create listings for their campus activities and events.  The original idea was to have a centralized site where clubs and organizations could enter their meetings and special events.  After some consideration and personal frustration trying to find infomation about a University-sponsored campus event, I decided the entire campus needed this calendar service even more than we needed it for clubs and organizations.  Therefore, I began working on a simple database to store activities and events for everyone at UCI, not just Dean of Students and clubs and organizations.

Unfortunately, since this was only a side project, it got bumped regularly by day-to-day computer support needs and the project could not be worked on regularly.  Months and even quarters would pass without even looking at it.

Now, however, this has been turned into a priority project, so we hope to debut in Fall 2004.  When completed, any member of the UCI community will be able to publicly post information about an activity or event sponsored by any club, organization, department, or program at UCI.  Individuals will be responsible for their own posts and listings will have detailed information about each event, including date, time, place, sponsor, description, costs, intended audience, and links for more information.  All of these listings will be completely searchable based on any criteria a web visitor happens to know or want.

Originally based on FileMaker Pro, the backend will probably instead be based on PHP and MySQL to better integrate with the campus authentication system and to provide better security and stability.  Furthermore, it will probably be hosted on the UCI Spirit Server.  If there's time, it will also be directly linked to the clubs and organizations search engine to a club's activities and events right alongside their contact information and description.  Or perhaps that will be added to the Version 2.0 wishlist which already has quite a bit on it, including some kind of mass-upload or batch-processing for departments wanting to post their complete activities/events calendar for the entire year all-at-once.  We'll see, we'll see...

The project has progressed significantly, so a new forum has been created for it under the SERVER DEVELOPERS section.
