- 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm @ Building
HIB (Humanities Instructions Building), Room #100 "With
mikes all around him and his hands full of biscuits, all the time playing,
the child gave out correct answers", stated The Music Academy's journal
in 1969, of two-year-old prodigy Ravikiran's demonstration. Born on February
12, 1967, Ravikiran stunned the music world with his ability to identify and
render about 325 ragas (melodic scales) and 175 talas (rhythmic cycles). He
was also able to answer complex technical questions on various aspects of
Carnatic music when quizzed by luminaries such as Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer,
Pandit Ravi Shankar, M S Subbulakshmi, Flute Mali, Palghat Mani Iyer, T N
Krishnan, Ramnad Krishnan and Alla Rakha. His
proclivity for music had been identified and nurtured by his father Chitravina
Narasimhan even when Ravikiran was a toddler, and within a few months, Ravikiran
made his first appearance in April 1969 at the Malleshwaram Sangeeta Sabha,
Bangalore. He
has been called the "Indian Mozart". He is probably most famous
for his concept of "melharmony", which is harmony which stays within
the melodic rules of an Indian raga (musical mode). Considered a virtuoso
chitravina player, he has been described as "probably the greatest slide
instrumentalist in the world today" by Radio Australia. Ravikiran has
also played the slide Hawaiian guitar, and is an accomplished vocalist. He
invented a variant of the chitravina called the navachitravina, which is smaller
and has a clearer tone in the higher frequencies. He currently resides in
Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. Ravi
Shankar, the famous sitar player, is most impressed with his talents, and
is noted as saying: "If you don’t believe in God, just look at
Ravikiran." Ravikiran
is the author of several widely read books, Appreciating Carnatic Music and
Perfecting Carnatic Music Level I and II. He is also the founder of the International
Foundation for Carnatic Music. Spring 2006 Event: Parichay - The Essence of Indian Carnatic Music, a lecture-demonstration S.
Sowmya April 25,
Tuesday 6:30 pm
to 8:30 pm @ Verano
Commons, University of California Irvine A
Carnatic musician by profession, Sowmya’s life has been soaked in melody
from the very beginning. Growing up in a traditional South Indian family,
she had her initial tutelage in music from her father Dr. Srinivasan, a Chemical
Engineer with an enduring passion for Carnatic Music. Later she was singularly
fortunate to be taken under the wings of Sangita Kalanidhi Dr. S. Ramanathan
- exemplary musician, esteemed musicologist and extraordinary human being.
Her musical instincts were further honed by Smt. T. Muktha, of the legendary
Brinda-Muktha duo. She is now a widely traveled, popular vocalist who strives
to adhere to the strict classical values imbibed from her gurus Dr. Ramanathan
and Smt. Mukta.
