About Us

U See Eyes is an on-campus organization at the University of California, Irvine for students interested in pursuing a career in optometry. Our goals are to provide information about the career of optometry, the application process and community service. Throughout the school year we have weekly meetings which includes visits from representatives from optometry schools throughout the nation as well as local optometrists who generously donate their time to share their experiences with optometry with students. We also share information about our upcoming events such as volunteering opportunities, Makapo, mock trials, fundraising, and socials. Kaplan also provides sponsorship for the club and information sessions for their OAT preparation course. We are also involved in fundraisers, volunteer work in the community and social events.

U See Eyes meets for the FALL 2011 quarter on Wednesdays from 5 to 6 pm in PSCB 140  !!!!!

U See Eyes is supported by Kaplan and we would like to thank them for their continued support.

Spring Quarter 2012

Week 7

Hey members!

Let's go on a date with the pre-optometry kids from UC Riverside! There is an inter Pre-Optometry Club social this Saturday, May 19th, from Noon to approximately 5 pm. We will be going on a lunch date at the Irvine Spectrum. We will meet them there. The current craving is Ruby's, but that is always subject to change. Afterwards, we will have a long walk on the beach. We will head over to Corona del Mar for some fun and games.

This is a great opportunity to meet your future colleagues! Please respond to this e-mail if you are interested in meeting them. Let us know if you need a ride, or can provide rides.

Also, FREE Practice OAT at UC Irvine THIS SUNDAY!

-U See Eyes

Howdy members!

During this Wednesday's meeting we will be having our elections for the U See Eyes 2012-2013 Cabinet. Remember: you must be a paid member to vote for your cabinet officers. This is a very crucial meeting as it will decide who your club officers (and perhaps even future colleagues) will be! So please attend and vote. Your voice matters.

For those who are running for cabinet positions, be sure to keep your speech under 3 minutes and to come dressed in business casual attire (as if you are going in for a job interview). Your professionalism (attire, punctuality, speech preparedness) will reflect on how you will perform your cabinet duties, so do your best to leave a good impression (especially if you are new to the club this quarter).

Best of luck to all candidates!

- U See Eyes

Week 6

Hey members!

As many of you know, we will not be having a general meeting this week. Instead, we will be having interviews for our upcoming cabinet election (week 7). If you are running for a cabinet position, be sure to keep an eye out on when your interview time slot will be. Further details will follow.

May the odds be ever in your favor!

- U See Eyes

Week 5

Greetings members!

On Wednesday we will be having our general meeting once again in MSTB 118 at 5 PM. Dr. Lindy Hoang of Orange County Optometric Group will be our guest speaker for the day. She will be talking about her experiences in the field and will be answering any questions you may have about how to get there. Hope to see you all there! And good luck with midterms!

- U See Eyes

Week 4

Hey members!

We hope midterms are going well for you all. Tomorrow we'll be having an optician workshop during our meeting. If you're interested in what an optician does, come out tomorrow to MSTB 118 at 5pm!

We'd also like to remind you all that this Saturday is our Western University School of Optometry Preview Day. If you are signed up with the club, make sure you also register yourself on Western's website. We hope to see you then!

-U See Eyes

Week 3

Hello members!

First of all, we'd like to thank all of those who came out to the SCCO Open House this past weekend. We hope it was an enlightening experience for you (especially if you haven't heard Dr. Munroe's presentation three times already). We'd also like to thank everyone who purchased from and helped out with our boba fundraiser. As you may have heard, it was a great success!

During tomorrow's meeting, Dr. Spitzer (of Dr. Michael N. Spitzer Optometry on Dupont) will be coming to speak about his practice and profession as well as answer any questions you may have. He will also be talking about Ortho-K/CRT, LASIK, and cataract surgery. For those of you who don't know what any of those are or how they affect the profession, we encourage you to come to the meeting and find out! Part of the shadowing process is knowing what the profession is comprised of and what lies in store for it.

We hope to see you tomorrow at 5pm in MSTB 118!

-U See Eyes

Week 2

Hey members!

If you were at last Wednesday's meeting, you know that there is no general meeting this coming Wednesday. Instead, we will be having a beach social at 5 pm and will be meeting at the flag poles. Rides will be provided.

Please respond to this e-mail (cabinet members as well) if you would like to attend so we know how much food and how many rides to provide. If you can and would like to drive (especially if you need to leave early), please mention that as well. Please respond by Tuesday night. We hope to see you then!

-U See Eyes

P.S. We would like to get to know each and everyone of you, especially this quarter's new members! So please come out and join us!

Week 1

Hi Everyone!

Welcome back! We hope you all had an exciting and much needed vacation. Let's get back to business, shall we?

Tomorrow, Wednesday the 4th, will be our first meeting of the quarter. It is still at 5pm, although we have changed the location of our general meetings to MSTB 118. We know it's everyone's least favorite building due to the distance, but we hope you'll come out anyway. We'll be discussing what it takes to be a competitive applicant so that you know what you need to do to get into the optometry school of your dreams!

For those who are not paid members:

Membership is $25 and with it, you will receive e-mails regarding internship/volunteer offers from local optometrists and you will also receive a U See Eyes club t-shirt. Remember that the fees essentially go back to you guys (through projector rental for guests' presentations and club events like beach socials).

We will not be having our California Pizza Kitchen fundraiser as scheduled because we were unable to book it. However, if the members would like, we can go to CPK anyway for a club social right after the meeting! It would be a great opportunity to know one another and the cabinet (because, you know, you should all build connections with those interested in the field). If you are unable to attend tomorrow's social, we will also be having a beach social next Wednesday!

Hope to see you all!

- U See Eyes

Hi members!

As you may have heard, SCCO's Open House is coming up on April 14th and WesternU's Preivew Day is on April 28th. Both events will be occurring on Saturday. We will  be heading over there as a club. If you would like to join us, please reply to this e-mail with your Name, Phone Number, and which event you would like to attend, listing both if you would like to attend both.

A couple reminders:
For SCCO's Open House, you will receive information about optometry and the admissions process similar to what was already presented by Dr. Munroe during the Winter Quarter. However, you will get to interact with the students and hear what they have to say about their life at SCCO. If you are not planning to travel with U See Eyes, please do not forget to RSVP with Eryn Kraning at ekranning@scco.edu. A link to the Open House flyer and location is provided. http://www.scco.edu/img/uploads/admissions/pdfs/Spring_Admission_Open_House_Flyer.pdf

For WesternU's Preview day you will learn about the many programs offered by the school and break off into smaller groups based on the program you are interested in. In our case it will be optometry. You will need to register, whether you are planning to travel with the club or not. Please be sure to register, http://prospective.westernu.edu/campusevents

All the best! Hope you are all having a great spring break!!

Winter Quarter 2012

Week 10

Hi everyone,

Thanks to everyone who has been coming out to our meetings this quarter. Tomorrow we will be having our end-of-the-quarter party at the usual place and time, so come out for pizza and drinks! We'll also be drawing raffles for gift cards and a 50% off Kaplan course certificate. If you're a paid member and have been attending meetings regularly, you don't want to miss possibly winning one of these prizes!

If you can't make it tomorrow, we wish you the best of luck on finals and we hope to see you all next quarter!

- U See Eyes

Week 9

Hi Everyone!

This week we will not be having a general meeting.

Next week, however, will be our end-of-the-quarter social/party where we will enjoy food and raffle prizes! Thank you to those who have been coming out to meetings throughout the quarter--your attendance might be rewarded through a raffled gift card to a nearby  food establishment or even a 50% off Kaplan course gift certificate (valued at nearly $700)!

Until then, we hope you have an enjoyable 9th week and we wish you the best of luck in your studies!

-U See Eyes

Week 8

Hello all Members!

Take a free practice test at UC Irvine this Saturday - Pre-Register at this link! This will be great practice for you all! So sign up soon!

We will be having a meeting today at 5PM in PSCB 140. We will be going over the typical questions asked during an optometry admissions interview and the strategies with which to approach them. If you have already gone through the interview process, the club would greatly appreciate any experience you could share with us! If the interview process is new to you, it would be very beneficial for you to attend and learn more about it. We hope to see you then!

-U See Eyes

Week 7

Hey Members!

Dr. Michael Burgoin (whose office is located in Costa Mesa) will be speaking to our club about his life and experiences in the field of optometry. Dr. Burgoin is a low vision specialist so if you have questions about low vision therapy or possibly any other specializations, come to tomorrow's meeting and get your answers! We all know doctors in all fields are constantly busy and it's difficult to even get a chance to ask them questions. Do not miss out on this valuable opportunity to get some face time with someone who knows the field and can answer any questions you may have.

-U See Eyes

Week 6

Hi Everybody!

A friendly reminder that there is no meetin this week due to mock interviews.

Mock Interviews will be held Wednesday from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm in Aliso Beach B, located at the top of the stairs next the the anteater sitting on the bench with his laptop. Mock Interviews can be used to learn about the types of questions that optometry schools may be asking you. You will also see where you currently stand and what preparations you will need to make in order to answer these questions successfully. Not only are our Mock Interviews meant to prepare you for real interviews into Optometry school, but they can prepare you for interviews into other health professional schools as well. You do not have to be fully decided on Optometry to attend one of our Mock Interviews.

You will be interviewed by 2-3 of our cabinet members. Treat the Mock Interview as the real thing. As you arrive for your interview, pretend that you have not met any anyone from the interview panel. We highly recommend arriving dressed up for the interview, as the interview panel will be. The interview will last approximately 20 minutes. This is generally shorter than the length of an actual interview, due to time restrictions. Following the interview, you will receive a copy of the questions you were asked and the cabinet will spend 5-10 minutes going over how well you did.

To sign up for a Mock Interview, please reply to this e-mail with your name, phone number, 1st choice, and 2nd choice. The time slots available are listed below. One per time slot. First come first serve.

Week 6: Wednesday, February 15

If you would like to stop by and see some of the questions that are being asked, or would like some tips on answering them, feel free!

Week 4

Hey members!

During our meeting this week, Dr. Jane Munroe of the Southern California College of Optometry is coming to speak to our club! If you were a member previous years, you know that Dr. Munroe is one of the most helpful people you can meet when it comes to optometry school and admissions. Not only that, but she is also entertaining! If you can, please come out and listen to what she has to say about SCCO and the field of optometry--you won't regret it! Remember that SCCO is one of three optometry schools in California so if you are interested in staying in the state, be sure to come out and see what it has to offer. Our meeting will of course be this Wednesday at 5 pm in PSCB 140. We hope to see you there!

Also, if you haven't signed up and are interested in attending the Braille Challenge, a major event by the Braille Institute in Anaheim, please tell us either by e-mail or in person! If you have any questions about the event, please come and ask us at the meeting.

Good luck on midterms!

Thanks to those who have been attending meetings! Remember: your attendance counts! For each meeting you attend, one ticket with your name will be entered into our raffle, which will be drawn at the end of the quarter. The prizes include gift cards an ultimate prize of a 50% off Kaplan course (valued at about $700). So please make that effort to come if you can!

Thank you all and I will see you tomorrow at 5 PM in PSCB 140.

Week 7

Posted: 11/7/2011

Greetings, members!

There's a bit more in store this week than usual--exciting, isn't it?!

For starters, tomorrow (Tuesday, November 8) we are having a representative from the Ohio State University School of Optometry speak to us about their program. Ohio State, from what we've observed, appears to be a very school spirit-oriented school and we're sure any of you would fit right in! Although this is not a general meeting, we hope to see you at RH 114 at 5pm.

On Wednesday, we are having a representative from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry at Salus University speak to us about their program. This will be held in our usual meeting room.

(Remember, your attendance at any individual meeting gets you one more entry into our end-of-the-quarter raffle. Be sure to show up if you can!)

Immediately after our Wednesday meeting, we will be going to the beach (most likely Corona del Mar) as a group for some quality bonding time! We will be providing food, drinks and various forms of entertainment for you guys. We understand that because our club is more informational than social, we have very few opportunities to socialize and such. But, we hope to see you all come out and enjoy yourselves during this great opportunity!

Cheers,
- U SEE EYES

Week 6

Posted: 10/31/2011

Greetings Optical Enthusiasts!

It's currently week 6 and we hope everyone is keeping sane with all their classes! This Wednesday, at the same time and place (RH 184, 5pm), a representative from the University of California, Berkeley School of Optometry will be coming to our meeting to speak about studying optometry up north. Remember, Berkeley is one of three optometry schools in California (the other two being Western and SCCO) and if you'd like to stay in the state, be sure to come out and hear about what they have to offer! We hope everyone has a great Halloween. Stay safe and study hard!

Best,
- U SEE EYES

Hey members!

Can you believe it? The quarter's already half-way done! Now let's continue strong while getting those midterms done!

Also don't forget! U SEE EYES is holding a fundraiser event at Gina's Pizza from 5pm to 11pm on Wednesday. Our club will receive 15% of the proceeds when you and your friends mention U SEE EYES Pre-Optometry Club! Remember: these funds are for you guys so don't miss this great opportunity to support your club and also enjoy a hearty meal at the same time at Irvine's best pizza place! This is also a great opportunity to socialize and get to know your cabinet and fellow members! You can bet we'll be there and we hope to see all of you there!

And of course, if you need to study, then come to Doheny Beach D in the student center. It has been reserved for us on Wednesday for our Study Session at 7pm.

Week 4

Hey guys!

We know just about all of you have wanted to go to New York sometime in your lives... so why not consider studying and living there! This Wednesday (at 5pm in RH 184) a representative from the State University of New York (SUNY) College of Optometry will be stopping by to tell us what it takes to be a competitive applicant to their program. So come by and bring your questions (whether it be about the program, the environment, campus life, etc.)--we encourage it!

Also, the Pre-Health Student Council is holding their 2nd annual HealthCon event this Thursday from 5pm to 7:30pm. Are you still not sure if optometry is the right career for you? Explore your options here! U See Eyes board members, along with representatives from several other pre-health clubs and societies on campus will be giving short presentations about their clubs and corresponding professions. We ask that you dress in business casual in order to look and be the professional you're aiming to be!
