GDC Prep Meeting tomorrow at 7PM, CSU Fullerton

0

If anyone’s planning on going to GDC this year, or heck, any tradeshow ever, you owe it to yourselves to go to this presentation at CSU Fullerton. You get about five seconds at these kinds of shows to prove to the person you’re talking to you’re not a waste of time, so learning all the minefields and what they look like is vitally important for getting the attention of the people you’ll be talking to in a positive way.

I highly recommend setting up carpools so it’s only $2 or $3 a person instead of $8. There’s a thread here for setting up drivers and passengers for club members to use. Details are below.

Game Jam Conclusion and Unvieling Night Information

Game Jam officially ended Monday night and all five teams successfully finished their games in time. We are now going to be sending the games out to be judged by members of the game industry and UCI faculty.

Tomorrow night we are going to have an Unveiling Night where we are going to show each of the five games and have the teams do a post-mordem of their game. We will have the Unveiling Night at 6:00 P.M. tomorrow (Thursday 1/26/2012) in DBH 6011 at UCI and everyone is invited to come out and see what is possible in just one week and no sleep.

To download and play the games, go to the following link:

Important information regarding Game Jam

Because of the holiday on Monday, we believe that our meeting hall will be
locked. To avoid being stuck out in the cold, we have decided to move the
meeting up to 3 P.M. on Monday outside next of ELH (where we met last
week). The meeting will be to announce the theme and teams for this Winter
Game Jam. After everything is announced, groups will immediately begin
working on creating the best game possible in one week. If you are not able
to attend this meeting but still wish to participate please email us so
we can give your team your contact information and vice-versa. The club
email is vgdc@mail.clubs.uci.edu

After the week long competition we will have a unveiling night where we
will show all the games that were made, as well as have the
games be judged by local game companies and faculty to determine a winner.

Just as a reminder, the last day to sign up for the Game Jam is Sunday.

Tutorials

A few people at the first meeting of Winter Quarter asked for some advice on learning XNA so here is a copy of a presentation that was given at the beginning of fall quarter:

The links at the end of the presentation are also very good, anyone who wants to be a programmer for the game jam should study these.

First Meeting of Winter Quarter

I hope everyone had a great winter break and is ready to start up the new

The other big announcement is that you can now register for this years
Winter Game Jam. For those who don’t know, Game Jam is a week long
competition where you are placed on a random team and given a theme to
make a video game. After a week, your game will be showed during an
unveiling ceremony and it will be judged by local game companies like
Blizzard, Obsidian, and the Behemoth as well as UCI professors. The
competition will start at the beginning of week 2 (12/16/2011) and you can
sign up to participate here.

Final Meeting: Project Showcase

Hey everyone, our final meeting for the quarter is this Monday. We will have each of the groups show of their games progress for the quarter. The projects have been coming along great and for some of you this may be the first time your seeing what your fellow club members have been working on. This is also a great chance to get feedback on your games. The meeting will be at the same time and same place: HIB 100 at 7pm.

GUEST SPEAKER- Mark Soderwall, Monday 11/21

Monday, November 21st, the VGDC is hosting Mark Soderwall, former Art Director for companies like LucasArts, Atari, and Electronic Arts as he gives a presentation on game development best practices and methodologies. These talks usually cost professionals several hundred dollars and he’s giving them to us for free, so come to HIB 100 Monday at 7:00 to hear how to make your games the best they can be!

And bring your friends! If we pack the room enough he might come do it again!

The portfolio talk and breaking into the industry is postponed to a later date. Today we had the producers present their team projects instead this night.

Topics for Next Meeting

Just a quick reminder for the next meeting. The scheduled topics will cover portfolio building and how to get yourself into the game industry. It might not seem important but if your a beginner artist or designer or any very competitive job category you should pay attention. Many major gaming companies are expecting portfolios so you might as start now. Also, there will be tips given in various ways of getting into the gaming industry.

Don’t forget we will be meeting this time in a new room HIB 100 at 7pm.
