Greetings Fencers and Fencers-to-be! I’m Laelia Nguyen, one of your presidents for the 2017-2018 school year. If you’re reading this, chances are you’re looking to throw down on the strip with a sword in hand, in which case you’re in the right place! We welcome people of all levels, beginners and experienced fencers alike. We have undergraduates, graduates, and faculty in our ranks. We offer epee, foil, and sabre at our club, as well as many opportunities to compete, learn from coaches, and hang out at social events!
There are many ways to get in contact with us. You can reach us by email at email@example.com. You can also join our Facebook page and be up-to-date on competitions and practices. We’ll be at the Anteater Involvement Fair on Monday, September 25 from 11-4pm in Aldrich Park where you can meet our officers and ask them questions about the club and fencing in general. You can also find us at Late Night at the ARC doing demos from 9:45-10:05pm in the Main Gym (the basketball courts) and also at 10:30-11:25pm in the Training Zone (a room on the second floor) if you’d like to see us in action.
Our practices begin Week 1, October 4 at 8:30 pm in the Activity Annex, and continue every week of the quarter on Wednesdays from 8:30 pm -11 pm and Fridays from 7 pm – 11 pm. All you need to bring are clothes and shoes that you’re comfortable working out in. We’ll provide everything else. Club dues are $50 per quarter and are to be paid by the start of Week 4.
See you soon!
Practice is canceled from July 8 to July 15 as the adult supervision (so to speak) will be out of town. Practice will resume on July 20, the Wednesday of the week after next. There should be no further hiatuses from July 20 through the end of the summer.
The Fencing Club is currently meeting for summer practice on Wednesdays and Fridays from 7-10 pm in the ARC Activity Annex. If you’re new to fencing, drop by and check us out! If you’re a current fencer in the area over the summer, come and fence–we’re still here!
Our practice is cancelled on Friday, May 5th, due to the Club Sports banquet. If you are a member of the club, please check your email and RSVP for the banquet. If you are not a member yet, please don’t show up on that day because nobody will be around.
The tournament we’ve been talking about is nearly here! This week each weapon will determine who will be on the squads, so be sure to let your captain know if you’re interested in competing. All three weapons have men’s and women’s squads with 3 members each. There may be alternate squad members, but that is up to each squad captain.
The tournament will be at UCI which means that our club will have to set everything up in the main gym. Please arrive at 8am on Saturday to help with setup. Additionally, be sure to eat breakfast and bring food or arrange some other accommodations for lunch. We will fence many schools, and the tournament will probably last until around 5pm. Afterwards, we go out to dinner.
It is very important to have all the necessary equipment for this tournament. Everyone needs to have a jacket, underarm protector, glove, knickers, weapon-appropriate mask, knee-high socks, appropriate shoes, 2 body cords, and 2 weapons. Sabre and foil fencers also need 2 mask cords and a lame. Women are required to have a chest protector. The club sells knee-high socks and t-shirts, and you should be able to borrow everything else by talking to an Armorer. Don’t forget to try everything out to make sure it works before the tournament!
Feel free to invite friends or family. They should be able to get into the ARC all right, but they will still need to pay for parking. Tournaments are fun, so enjoy yourself and try to learn a thing or two!
Practice is cancelled on Wednesday, November 11th for Veteran’s Day. The ARC will be closed.
Practice is officially cancelled on Wednesday, November 25th for Thanksgiving, but the ARC will be open until 8pm, so feel free to practice on your own.
Practice is cancelled on Friday, November 27th for Thanksgiving. The ARC will be closed.
Enjoy the time off.
Hello everyone, I hope you’re enjoying your break.
The first practice of Winter Quarter will be Wednesday, January 7 at 8:30pm. I believe the first meeting of the class will be the same day at 7pm. Not too much news at this time. Once the quarter starts will have updates about social or other events, but for the most part everything is business as usual. One thing of note is that our last two tournaments of the year are this quarter. Let your captain know if you want to participate.
See you at practice!
There will be no practice during the week of Thanksgiving. Both practices (11/26 and 11/28) are cancelled as the ARC will be closed during our normal practice time. Enjoy your holidays.
The first team tournament is this Sunday. Make sure you’ve communicated with your team captain/driver so that you know when and where to meet them. Double check to make sure you have all the necessary equipment (plus that the team has spares for things like weapons). The club does not provide knee-high socks, so make sure you buy your own if you need to! The tournament is at CalTech and starts at 10am. It will be a long (but fun!) day of fencing, so bring a lunch and/or snacks to eat during the day, and have a good breakfast before you leave. We’ll probably all get dinner after the tournament is over. You will all do amazing, and don’t forget that the most important thing is to have fun, and hopefully learn a thing or two!
See you Sunday!
